What is Kratom & How Does it Work?
With the ever-growing interest in alternative therapies, many people are turning to natural remedies to help them cope with the stresses of everyday life. One such alternative that has been widely used in Southeast Asia for centuries is Kratom. Here is everything you need to know about Kratom use.
In this article, you’ll learn:
- What is Kratom?

- Veins and strains of Kratom
What is Kratom?
Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is an evergreen tree native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia and part of the coffee plant family. The farmers in Southeast Asia have become experts in growing and harvesting Kratom and so to this day the highest quality Kratom available in the world comes from this region.
Kratom leaves have been harvested for centuries for their medicinal properties as an aid to workers.
Where is Kratom grown?
Kratom is grown in:
- Indonesia
- Borneo
- Thailand
Indonesia accounts for 95% of Kratom production. We source our Kratom from verified expert Kratom farmers in Indonesia, with whom we’ve built strong and lasting relationships over many years. All our Kratom products are of the highest purity and quality.
How does Kratom work?
Kratom leaves contain two alkaloids: mitragynine and 7-α-hydroxymitragynine. These act on the opioid receptors in the brain. Taking Kratom can have stimulant effects, calming effects, or offer pain relief, depending on the strain and vein of Kratom, as well as the dosage.
Traditionally, people chewed Kratom leaves or brewed them to make tea. Today, Kratom can be taken in a number of convenient ways, including powder and capsules. The only difference between the two is that Kratom capsules take a bit longer to dissolve in your stomach, so the onset is slightly slower. You can also take Kratom extract, which is a more concentrated form of Kratom that can be made into teas, oils or used as a potent powder.
Some people find the taste of Kratom powder to be bitter and earthy. It is best to start with low doses and move to higher doses once you know how Kratom affects you. Mixing Kratom with other drugs or alcohol is not recommended.
What is Kratom used for?
Kratom use has a few benefits depending on how much you take and which type you choose.
Low doses of Kratom can give you an energy boost, help focus and alertness, and can make you a bit more sociable. Higher doses of Kratom tend to have an analgesic (pain-relieving) and sedative effect, as well as give a general feeling of well-being.
Kratom veins and strains
There are two ways to categorize Kratom. For our purposes, we’ll refer to them as veins and strains. Veins refer to the vein color in the Kratom leaf. These have different effects on your opioid receptors and body. Kratom strains refer to where the Kratom was grown because the climate and soil affect its active substances.
Kratom veins
There are four main vein colors of Kratom leaves – white, red, green, and yellow. The age of the Kratom tree when the leaves are harvested can affect the potency and alkaloid makeup of the Kratom.
White Vein Kratom
White Vein Kratom has lower levels of Mitragynine (pain reducer/sedative) and higher levels of 7-OH (for energy and focus). Think of a young, energetic teenager with boundless enthusiasm and energy.
Popular White Vein Kratom batches include: Elephant, Bali, Borneo, Maeng Da, Malay, Horn, Indo, Sumarinda, and Thai.
Uses and benefits of White Vein Kratom:
- Mental clarity, alertness, and focus
- Energy boost
- Mood enhancement and a feeling of euphoria
Red Vein Kratom
Red Vein Kratom can be thought of as the calm and mature one. It has higher quantities of Mitragynine but is lower in 7-OH and has a calming, sedative effect, as well as offering potential pain-relief benefits. Think of Red Vein Kratom as a sage-like old man meditating on a mountaintop.
Popular Red Vein Kratom batches include: Maeng Da, Bali, Borneo, Chocolate, Dragon, Elephant, Hulu Kapuas, Sumatra, and Thai.
Uses and benefits of Red Vein Kratom:
- Calming and relaxing effect on your body
- Stress relief
- May help with insomnia
- Mood enhancement and a feeling of euphoria
- Can help relieve pain and muscle tension
Green Vein Kratom
Green Vein Kratom is high in both Mitragynine and 7-Oh. Greens tend to be the strongest forms of Kratom. It can be seen as a combination of the stimulating alertness and euphoria of the White Vein Kratom and the calm composure of the Red Vein Kratom. Think of a 30-40-something-year-old who enjoys a party but can also happily sit on the couch watching Netflix.
Popular Green Vein Kratom batches include: Ketapang, Maeng Da, Borneo, Dragon, Horn, Hulu Kapuas, Sumatra, Malay, and Thai.
Uses and benefits of Green Vein Kratom:
- A mild energy and motivation boost
- May help with anxiety and boost confidence to make social situations easier
- Mood enhancement and a feeling of euphoric
Yellow Vein Kratom
Yellow Vein Kratom uses a different drying process to the other Kratom veins, which changes its color and effects. It can be seen as falling somewhere between Green Vein Kratom and Red Vein Kratom and is great for a general feeling of well-being.
Popular Yellow Vein Kratom batches include: Gold Bali, Vietnam, and Borneo.
Uses and benefits of Yellow Vein Kratom:
- A mild energy and motivation boost
- A feeling of well-being
- Can help relieve aches and pains
Kratom Strains
Kratom strains are named after geographic areas but don’t necessarily grow there. These are some of the most common Kratom strains:
Malay
A popular type is the Green Malay Kratom, which acts as a stimulant to help with focus, mindset and to provide clarity.
Sumatra
Users of Red Sumatra Kratom report that it is great for stress relief or for use as a sleep aid. White Sumatra Kratom can give you an energy perk and a feeling of well-being.
Maeng Da
Maeng Da actually means ‘pimp grade’ and is usually a blend of the farmer’s strongest strains. It is one of the most popular Kratoms in the world and is often used as a substitute for your morning coffee.
Bali
Bali Kratom received its name from the relaxed lifestyle of Bali as it’s a more chilled strain. It is not actually from Bali.
